Soap and Bath Treats FAQ

What is essential oil?  Essential oils are natural plant oils that are steam distilled or cold pressed from plant material such as flowers, leaves, twigs, bark, peel. Essential oils  give body care products pleasant natural aroma and in many cases soothing, healing and rejuvenating properties.  Mount Blossom's products are scented only with essential oils.

What is the difference between Fragrance oil and Essential oil?  Essential oils are natural compounds, while fragrance oils are aromic chemicals created in a lab.  Fragrance oils do not posses any healing qualities and may be irritating.  Fragrance oils are sometimes labled Perfume, Fragrant oil or Fragrance.

Mount Blossom's products do not contain any fragrance oils and are scented only with our own unique blends of pure essential oils, some of which are certified organic.

What are the benefits of Essential Oils?  Essential Oils are the heart of aromatherapy.

Here are some of the oils, butters and herbs that we use in our products and their benefits:

Shea butter *- Nourishing and gentle even for the very sensitive skin.  Soothes dry and chapped skin.

Castor oil - Soothing and skin conditioning.

Lavender and Lavandin  - Soothing and healing. Often used to treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema, burns, insect bites, etc.

Rose Geranium - Considered to have antiseptic, astringent and antifungal properties. Sometimes used to treat cellulitis and water retention

Clary Sage - Benefits oily skin and hair, skin conditions such as acne and boils.

Petitgrain* - Good conditioning properties for oily skin and hair, antiseptic.

Palmarosa * - Is often used to treat acne and stimulate cell regeneration.

Rosemary - Powerful skin and hair conditioning properties. Promotes hair growth, regulates seborrhea and acts as an antiseptic.

Amyris - Acts as antiseptic and can benefit  dry skin and sore muscles

Spirulina* - Green algae high in protein, vitamins and amino acids.

Calendula* - Is used to treat a wide range of skin problems such as rashes, cracked skin, scars, eczema, infections etc

Chamomile*- Anti inflammatory, soothing.

Rose Petals* & Rose Absolute - Can be helpful in treating wrinkles and sensitive skin conditions

* Certified Organic Ingredient

Do you use certified organic ingredients in your products?  Yes. Most oils, butters and herbs are certified organic by QAI or Oregon Tilth and are purchased from reputable vendors in the U.S.

What is  wildharvested?  Just like the name suggests, some ingredients (mostly herbs) are harvested from the wild. They are not farm cultivated, obviously grown naturally without chemicals, but are not certified organic.  Some people also call it  wildcrafted.

Do you use preservatives in your products?  Mount Blossom's products contain only natural preservatives like Rosemary Extract, Citric Acid or no preservatives at all.

What is the "shelf life" of your products?  We encourage you to use our products as soon as possible and not store them for a long time. Since natural preservatives are not effective at preserving products for a long time approximate life of our products is 6 to 8 months. This estimate can be affected by heat and humidity conditions. The more humid the environment where the product is stored the more susceptible it is to rancidity, bacterial growth and even mold.  Natural skin care does come at a cost, but it's well worth it.

How fresh are your products? Soaps are made monthly with additional 4 to 6 weeks cure time.  Bath treats, face and body butters are made weekly in small batches.

Can I have an allergic reaction or sensitivity to natural products?  Yes. People with nut allergies can have an allergic reaction to skin care products containing nut oils. We do not use Sweet Almond oil, Macadamia Nut oil, Peanut oil etc. in our soaps. Vanilla Almond Cookie scrub contains ground almonds.
Allergic reactions or sensitivity are also possible to essential oils that we do use  like Lemongrass, Peppermint, Cinnamon Leaf, Cassia, Black Pepper and citrus oils like Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerine, Lemon.  Most people with sensitive skin (me including) do not develop any irritation to the oils mentioned above, however some people can.  Please be assured that these oils are always used in carefully measured, skin safe amounts.
People with highly sensitive skin often use only unscented soap.
All ingredients are fully disclosed, nothing is hidden. If you have known allergies or sensitivity to certain oils or herbs please check the ingredient list carefully before you buy.

What is Infused Oil or Plant Infusion?  Plant material and oil are placed in a heat safe container on the stove top and gently heated up, then transferred to an airtight jar to mature for several weeks. After that the plant material is strained out and the oil can be used in a variety of skin care recipes.
We infuse certain oils with herbs and plant material for two purposes. One: is to create an oil that will carry the botanical properties of the herb it was infused with into the final product such as soap, body butter etc. Two: is to tint or color the oil with the herb or other plant material that will color the final product, like soap.
Example: alkanet root infused in safflower oil gives it a deep purple color which in return can color a bar of soap from light pink to dark purple depending on the amount of infused oil used in a recipe.

How are your products colored?  Only the natural way, by using herbs and herb in oil infusions.
We do not use any mineral pigments because most of them, on the market today are made in the lab and are considered "nature identical"; in addition they can be colored with synthetic colorants.

Is your packaging environmentally friendly? As much as possible. The soaps are wrapped in recycled paper that is also completely biodegradable or recyclable.  Unfortunately body butter, milk bath and bath salts cannot be wrapped in paper.  All of our plastic containers are made of P.E.T., approved for food contact and are recyclable.
Currently milk baths are also offered in polyethylene bags that are also recyclable at the recycling centers that accept all plastic bags.
